Americans Glued to World Cup Matches…or maybe not.

Figures from a recent Pew survey reveal just how unpopular soccer is in the US relative to other sports:  only 4% of American adults chose soccer as their favorite sport to watch.  Pew breaks that down by race and backs up the comment I made earlier about World Cup advertising in Hispanic markets.

Of course this study says nothing about what sports Americans like to play or even whether they like to watch soccer–it just reports favorite sports to watch.  I would’ve liked to see more questions along these lines.  Instead, the rest of the survey is about following sports news and participation in fantasy sport leagues.  With apologies to all the fantasy team managers out there, I honestly hadn’t heard of fantasy sport leagues since junior high.  Apparently they’re alive and well.
