All I’ve had time to do today is upload some pictures from this past week. Pinar flew back to Turkey this morning and now I’m running off to watch the U.S.-Italy soccer match. Starting tomorrow Monday I’ll be back to writing and posting daily, so stay tuned. In the meantime, check out my new photos.

Americans Glued to World Cup Matches…or maybe not.
June 15th, 2006 — World Cup
Figures from a recent Pew survey reveal just how unpopular soccer is in the US relative to other sports: only 4% of American adults chose soccer as their favorite sport to watch. Pew breaks that down by race and backs up the comment I made earlier about World Cup advertising in Hispanic markets.

This past Monday, several hours before sitting down at the Sony Center in Potsdamer Platz to watch the U.S. get crushed by the Czech Republic, I met with Jennifer Miller, a fellow grad student studying Turkish immigrants in Berlin. Pinar arrived in Berlin today so I might not be writing so much over the next couple days as we spend time checking out more of the city. However, I have written some posts in advance that will be uploaded automatically, so keep checking in.
Also, if you haven’t done so yet, I recommend clicking on one of the subscribe links to [...]
World Cup Advertisers Reach 5 Billion Viewers in 4 Weeks
June 7th, 2006 — World Cup
The New York Times has an interesting story on the gazillions of dollars major corporations are spending on advertising at the World Cup. Why? The expected TV audience for the final here in Berlin is 300 million, more than three times that of the Super Bowl.
Before I left the US, I remember seeing only one [...]
