While I was waiting in line at the post office today a middle-aged woman behind me commented on the wall-mounted TV tuned to CNN:
“Why is there a TV in the post office? I just came from the bank and there was one there, too.”
“That’s crazy. I’m tempted to get one of those remotes that turns off all the TVs in the area.”
“Yeah, I mean, I know it’s a drug addiction and we’ve just got to manage it, but you don’t see any crack lying around the post office.”
Hmm, good point. I like to think she was either a budding comedian or the member of a 12-step Seinfeld Addicts recovery program. Either way, she made my day.
She also reminded me of the following two things:
The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy had a clever song in 1991 called “Television, the Drug of a Nation” [lyrics].
Steve Pavlina had a very inspiring article about what changed in his life when he gave up watching TV for 30 days last year: 8 Changes I Experienced After Giving Up TV.
…said the person who wrote this post while watching American Idol.

I have that CD
- my brother-in-law bought it for me. We have the same problem in the UK. Can’t people survive without TV for a few hours? It does seem a very sad state of affairs that people spend more time watching people being through out of reality TV shows than they do watching reality working out who should be thrown out of government!
PS Not a critisism of you watching American Idol of course!
- Just wondering if it is a government conspiracy that is catching us all
Hear, hear!
