I’m in Istanbul now and about to begin fieldwork for my dissertation on Turkey’s Directorate of Religious Affairs. I got here on Friday, so I’m still dealing with jet lag, but it hasn’t been that bad, and I’m wondering if it has anything to do with the pound or two of cherries that I’ve eaten. I found out afterwards that they’re supposed to help.
The other nice surprise has been that I can get free (but slow) wireless Internet access from the balcony of my in-laws’ apartment, where I’m staying till we get our own place. This saves me some cash, but more importantly it cuts down on water consumption — last summer I had to take a shower every time I came back from the smoky internet cafe down the street.
I also wanted to say thank you to all my friends back in Princeton who helped host, and came to, the going away party and especially those that helped move our stuff into storage. And to Ilhan, well, I literally wouldn’t have made it here without you. Thanks!

Hi Jim,
hope that there will be a long sunny summer, so you can send us many reports and pics of Istanbul. I haven’t been there now for eight months, definitely too long for not beeing in Istanbul.
