The All-But-Dissertation Survival Guide is a free monthly newsletter “devoted to practical strategies for successfully completing your doctoral dissertation.” I’ve been getting the newsletter for a few months now and I think it’s really well done. The tips are sensible and I like how they enlist current and graduated Ph.D. students to write about what’s worked for them. I also like that the newsletter only comes every month or so — the articles are more in-depth and the advice doesn’t pile-up like it does when you’re addicted to productivity blogs.
The latest issue is a good example of what the newsletter has to offer. The article titled “Basic ‘How To’ Advice on Writing a Dissertation” is full of oldies but goodies on writing, like these:
Write every day (even if only for ten minutes and even if the “writing” is only touching a part of the dissertation, writing in a dissertation journal, or tweaking footnotes and/or bibliography).
Write first. On those days that you can arrange your schedule to do your writing first thing in the morning, you should do so (and on the other days, squeeze the writing in wherever you can).
There are many more articles in the archive section, so check it out and let me know what you think.
