Just days after I said I wanted to create photo flash cards, I ran across Ethan Schoonover’s thorough review of a program called Mental Case that looks like the end-all, deluxe flash card program for the Mac. You can make standard flash cards for remembering vocabulary and important dates and names, but you can also drag and drop images stored on your computer or import photos using iSight.
Even better, you can send a note, image, or screen shot directly to Mental Case using hot keys when you’re using another program. For example, while reading Cihan’s article on Turkey in Safari or Firefox, I could highlight the date when the principle of secularism was adopted in the Turkish constitution and whisk it into Mental Case for later review without breaking my stride.
Another cool application would be making flash cards of paintings or photographs for Art Appreciation 101 and trying to spot the difference between a Monet and a Manet. Or, if you’re taking Paparazzi 101, you could brush up on your celebs. Was that Mary Kate or Ashley?
Ethan has posted a video of Mental Case in action and there’s a 30-day free trial I plan to check out.
Has anyone used this or a similar program? If so, I’d like to hear your thoughts.
