There’s a quick way to check whether a document being edited in Mac OS X contains any unsaved changes. Just look at the red button in the upper left corner of the window. If it has a dark dot in the center, the document has changed since being saved. If not, you’re all set.
I’m usually pretty good about saving as I go because — advertising aside — Mac computers and apps do crash. But since learning about this little visual cue I’ve been that much better.

I didn’t know that! And I had a file delete/crash problem just yesterday (although this tip wouldn’t have helped).
I AM finally starting to use the sync, backup and iDisc features that .mac provides with my account. I lost all my web page files…you may notice that my web site is down right now. I am frantically trying to re-create what was lost. Also need to invest in an external storage unit so I can take advantage of Time Machine on Leopard. That would have saved my ***.
Yes, macs do crash. Don’t tell Mark, though. He won’t let me forget it.
Sorry to hear about your backup trouble!
Oh yeah, I had hard drive failure in my old PowerBook back in 2003 before starting grad school. Big pain.
