Turkey - Germany

I just got home from watching the first half of the Euro 2008 semi-final in the center of Istanbul where there are thousands of people already lighting flares and going nuts (my wife claimed the TV tonight for the season finale of hugely popular Turkish series, so that’s why I went out). It was a rush being there, but I don’t know if my heart could handle a full match - I just got too excited. Now I’m at home, probably still too excited about the match.

Observations:

My five minute walk home took me past the German Consulate. There were extra police stationed around it - hope there’s no trouble tonight.

The Turkish commentators are really hating the refs. I don’t know enough about soccer to say much about them.

I love the word “equalizer” (though not the fact that Germany scored one in the first half).

UPDATE: Again, I’m no soccer expert, but I don’t think Germany won tonight because they played better; they won because Turkey made some unfortunate errors. Hmph.

YOU went OUT to a SPORTING event?! And it was exciting? Hmmm. Either you have become totally European….or pod people have replaced my brother.

Nah, marching band was just a cover! Really! Here’s a picture of me enjoying my first serious soccer game, a match between two rival Jordanian teams. It was also my first exposure to crowd management that involved machine guns and armored personnel carriers.

(shaking head in disbelief)

I just don’t know what to say. Around here, we proudly carry the paste-y-white-people-with-no-sports-interest gene. In fact, marching band season is upon us. Connor has been taking private lessons for drumline and will start his 8 hour long rehearsal days soon. Mom and Dad will be attending the DCI competition with us when they come out next month.

Sports. Pfbht!

I totally agree that Turkey lost because of unfortunate silly mistakes though they did play well.

Did you see the referee in the previous game? He was hugging the Croatian players and giving them some comfort right a few minutes after the game was over. he was almost crying with them. He could bluntly say that his mother was Croatian so he has sympathy to Croatia even before the game. And UEFA still claims that such referee will not be biased! oh yea in Europe people don’t care about political correctness ! He will be the referee in the final match next week by the way…

Oh , I watched the game with 5 Germans! What an evening was it!:) oh i am having one of those football talks with you…

I saw that ref hugging the Croatian player! How touching…

Were those 5 Germans in Barcelona? Do they know they’ll be outnumbered for the final? :)
